How to learn from a mock exam instead of just checking the score

A simple method for reviewing mock answers, identifying weak topics and planning your next study session.

Choose one purpose

Decide whether the session is for learning a topic or practising pacing. In Health Students, answer feedback is available during practice, including mocks. If you read explanations as you go, the elapsed time includes that review; do not compare it directly with an official examination timetable.

Review uncertainty as well as mistakes

A correct guess can hide a knowledge gap. Note which answers you could justify and which you could not. For each uncertain item, write one question you need your course material or tutor to answer.

Classify the error

Use a few useful labels: unfamiliar knowledge, misunderstood term, missed instruction, calculation or rushed reading. A label should point to an action. For example, a missed instruction calls for a reading habit; an unfamiliar topic calls for focused revision.

Check the explanation

Read the explanation and key points, then compare important clinical detail with your approved references. Independent practice questions can contain errors. Report a discrepancy rather than memorising an explanation you cannot reconcile with your teaching material.

Plan the next session

Pick two or three recurring gaps and study those before taking another full mock. Return to related questions after you can explain the principle. Use Progress to review your practice history, while remembering that app targets are not official pass marks or guarantees of success.
